The town extends from a roman period settlement on an alluvial plain ,left of the river Entella along the eastern Riviera coast of Liguria in east Tigulio. Its hinterland is separated from the mountains by a series of hills covered in olive groves.
Lavagna is made up of the chief town and four hamlets, Barassi, Cavi di Lavagna, Santa Giulia di Centaura and Sorlana , measuring 13,88 km2. It borders Cogorno and Ne to the north and coasts the Ligurian sea to the south. Chiaveri is on the west.

Inter-district race :Marinaro del Tigullio. Santa Margherita Ligure, San Michele di Pagana, Rapallo, Zoagli, Chiavari, Lavagna e Sestri Levante challenge one another between May and August in a series of rowing races on traditional skiffs or fishing boats in the waters of the Gulf of Tigullio.
