Celle Ligure

Celle Ligure , appealing and picturesque,is a little jewel in a cove along the coast. A place for those who wish to be lured by the charm of this almost intact medieval village. At one time the coast was full of huts and warehouses for the boats and fishing tackle, the so-called "cellae" which gave this pretty village its name.

Dwellings and buildings of historic prestige rise along the cobbled streets of the historic centre, among which the church of Nostro Signore della Consolazione(convent) founded in 1468 by the Augustinian order. Inside it has had a sole aisle since 1725 and outside the facade is in neo-classic style. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo is an ancient medieval church accessible by a black and white pebbled parvis flight of steps dating back to 1881. The church preserves the important polyptych of San Michele e Santi commissioned to Perin del Vaga in 1535, a clear inspiration to the San Michele by Raffaello. Inside there are also canvases of the Ligurian school, sculptures and various 17th century paintings. A late 13th century pinnacled belfry rises from the right hand aisle. In the village of Piani on the facade of the church of the Assunta , you can admire a high relief in terracotta representing the Assunta with San Michele and the dragon by Lucio Fontana. The hamlet along the coast was defended from sarcene invasions in the 16th century by two small castles, now gone, one on a cape and the other a few metres from the sea. Tradition has it that the people of nearby Monferrato helped build them.

Behind the village, today divided into two main centres of Piani to the east, with its hotels and sports facilities and the historic centre to the west; along the roman way there is the splendid Crocetta Walk. Numerous are the events organized during the year, like the Ferrari Rally, the Meeting Arcobaleno, an international athletic event, and Navicelle, shows for children. The Mand'ommu exhibition , dedicated to ligurian craftsmanshipis of particular interest.

Celle ligure also boasts a great cycling tradition, in fact it gave birth to Giuseppe "Gepin" Olmo, one of the greatest cyclists of the 1930s , founder of the bicycle factory of the same name, a world-wide renowned brand. In the hinterland of Celle there are many cycling itineraries which allow bike enthusiasts to pedal along gentle slopes among olive groves and vineyards.
