Borgio Verezzi

Borgio is an old village a short way from the sea. It owes its name to the two places that form it: Borgio along the coast and Verezzi in an elevated position. The first notices relating to the history of Borgio go back to 181 BC and concern the only clash in an open field between the army of the Ingauni and the Roman one, which took place in the plain between Borgio and Pietra Ligure. In 1885 a road was inaugurated between Borgio and Verezzi which then became a single commune in 1933. At Borgio you can admire the Santuario del Buon Consiglio, whose original structure dates back to the 9th century, and the San Pietro Church, built at the end of the 18th century. Climbing in the small village of Verezzi, you can admire a splendid panoramic view, with the four Saracen villages: Poggio, Piazza, Roccaro and Crosa. The latter preserve the old environmental and architectural characteristics of small hill villages on the Ligurian coast. In the charming Piazza hamlet, which has one of the most beautiful panoramic terraces over the sea on the Riviera, during the summer season for decades the famous Theatrical Festival has been held. East of the village there is the Valdemino cave, rich in stalactitic and stalagmitic concretions of particular interest that confer a fantastic atmosphere on the place.
