In the southern extremity of Alta Val Bormida and dominated by Monte Carmo is Bardineto, a village immersed in chestnut , beech and birch woodlands, renowned for its wood or timber, a precious local resource that for centuries fueled the furnaces of the glass-making factories in the neighbouring Altare. The mountains surrounding the maze of grottos full of various "buranchi" well or pot holes which are a paradise for speleologists. Some forms of erosions are also visible in the open; interesting is the "Buranco of Bardineto" which is about 2kms of tunnels concentrated on several levels above an underground stream. It is sthe largest grotto of the Valle Bormida and an archeological time capsule , one of the most interesting of Liguria.
This hamlet, bordering west Riviera Ligure and lower Piedmont became the feud of Del Carretto of Balestrino in the XIII century, the ruins of the feudal castle are a testimony of this, interesting for its polygonal map(16 sides), of which only four sides have survived , and surrounding medieval wall. In 1795 it was the scene of General Massena's battle between the Austrians and the French. The characteristic IX century church of San Nicolò ,erected on the hill of the same name , holds frescos of 1400, whereas the parish church was built in 1720. Walking through the cobbled streets of the historic centre you can admire on the houses about fifty walled-in panels (mainly ceramic or embossed copper) of great artistic prestige and inspired by important characters and events of the history of Bardinetto..They were created in the early 80s by famous contemporary artists in order to appraise the historic centre.
Besides tourism and timber , mushroom picking is an important local resource; they are sold dried or pickled in oil. On the third Sunday of September there is the feast of the Fungo d'Oro (Gold Mushroom). Moreover there are numerous tracks and trails for those who love trekking and MTB.
