Savona - Riviera delle Palme

Set in a big woody hollow of the upper Val Bormida, Calizzano affords a vast range of excursion paths amid unspoilt nature, with opportunities to refresh oneself at no fewer than 13 springs. The water of Calizzano is famous, and is bottled and sold all over Northern Italy. Between Calizzano and the Melogno Hill you go through a wonderful forest, the Barbottina beech wood in which there is the “Big Beech tree”, a tree almost two centuries old, 37 metres tall and with a diameter of 347 cm, while in the Rionero wood the “Castagnone” (big chestnut tree) is over 250 years old and 5 metres in diameter. Numerous outdoor sports can be practised, including tennis, trekking and angling. The undisputed protagonists of the culinary tradition of the upper Val Bormida are the edible boletus and chestnuts. The chestnut dried in the tecci of Calizzano and Murialdo has been chosen as a Slow Food Presidium; once called “poor men’s bread” it is an ingredient used for biscuits, creams and ice creams. To these two specialities are dedicated the events “Funghinpiazza” and “Festa d’Autunno” (Autumn Feast). Mention must be made of the ruins of the old medieval castle and the San Lorenzo parish church. In the Frassino area there is the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, rebuilt in the early 19th century.
