The town of Arcola (Arcula) was a Roman military outpost during the struggles between Rome and the Ligurian tribes. Arcola is set on a hilltop and has a typical compact Ligurian defence structure. It was later dominated by the Castello degli Obertenghi, a 10th century castle, of which only the pentagonal tower remains. The 15th century Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli is located near Arcola and can be visited daily. ( More Less )

Trebiano, an ancient nearby village, offers a beautiful view of the valley. S. Michele, its parish church, with a 16th century façade, and the ruins of its hilltop castle, shouldn't be missed.

The territory of Arcola has a lot to offer tourists: its delicious local wines and cuisine; lovely walks through its vineyards and surrounding ancient olive groves; and various sports options.

Many easy footpaths are located along the Magra River. This area is part of the Regional Park of Montemarcello-Magra.
