Urbe

Urbe is a town on the northern slope of the Ligurian Apennine bordering the province of Genoa ; it includes scattered centres in the upper valley of the Orba stream, surrounded by chestnut and oak woods. In the past its main resources were agriculture and chestnuts, the latter being a typical commodity in those days. The hamlets of the vast district of Urbe (Vara, Martina d’Olba, Acquabianca and San Pietro d’Olba) were an old possession of Tiglieto Abbey, given to the Bishop of Acqui in the 10th century.

San Pietro d’Olba stands on the confluence of Orbarina in Orba, an extremely important and strategic area as it was the crossroads of the ancient roads along the rivers leading to Fajallo Pass and Beigua.

Interesting to visit is the seventeenth-century church of San Pietro with its four large canvases which depict the most significant moments of the saint’s life; Noteworthy too is the parish church of San Giacomo in Martina d’Olba which preseves interesting decorations and an 18th century marble altar.

The territory of Urbe by the upper road of the Monti Liguri has many trekking itineraries for sports lovers and for those who just like walking. The Orba river valley is a destination for excursions and can be reached both from Albisola and Varazze. Not to be missed is the walk along the Fajallo Pass,1061 mts high, through fields and beech woods with a breathtaking view of Genoa and Monte Rosa.
