Urbe

A commune situated on the northern slope of the Ligurian Apennine, it includes nucleuses scattered around in the upper valley of the Orba stream, surrounded by chestnut tree and oak woods. The hamlets of the vast commune of Urbe (Vara, Martina d’Olba, Acquabianca and San Pietro d’Olba) were an old possession of the Tiglieto abbey, given to the bishop of Acqui in the 10th century. Mentioned in imperial diplomas of 981 and 1002, it followed the vicissitudes of Sassello, which it was part of until 1798. The small village of San Pietro d’Olba stands at the confluence of the Orbarina and Orba streams, an extremely important strategic area because it was a crossroad of old paths that, following the line of the two rivers, led to the Fajallo Pass and Beigua. The innermost of the hamlets of the commune of Urbe is Acquabianca, whose name, meaning ‘white water’, underlines the transparency of the Rio Baracca and the Rio Carpescio, tributaries of the Orba. The territory of Urbe is crossed by the Upper Road of the Monti Liguri, with numerous trekking itineraries immersed in nature, suited to sportsmen and to those who love to take walks.
