Territorio Ospedaletti:

Ospedal,with its 3.385 inhabitants,is the ninth town of the province for number of inhabitants. It is situated in a natural amphitheatre, between Capo Nero and Capo Sant’Ampelio and only six kilometres from the centre of Sanremo and about 30 kms from the chief town.

The lush sub-tropical vegetation , combined with a refined and moderate urbanization, make Ospedaletti an attractive residential area for tourists in the Riviera dei Fiori.

It enjoys a mild climate.

Cultural Ospedaletti:

The chapel of Madonna delle Porrine is a mariano shrine whose main festivity is celebrated on 8 September, the birth of the Virgin Mary.

According to popular tradition the building of the shrine dates back to before 1594 when the natural harbour of Ospedaletti, inhabited at that time by the people of Coldirodi, was pillaged and plundered by pirates; seventy inhabitants were kidnapped by the corsairs . Later the senate of the Republic of Genoa decided to build a watch-tower and fortress to ward off other raids while the community worked on the building of a religious and spiritual place of worship on the land of Tommaso Rossi.

The chapel is located on a hill east of Ospedaletti, rising high with its two facing bell towers, the church of the Madonna, seems to be called of the Porrine because the site was a natural garden with small plants which looked like “porri” ( leeks).
