Mortola Superiore (popularly known as i Ciotti) is a district of Ventimiglia, situated on a high ground 300 metres above sea level. The medieval inhabited area , abandoned at the end of the 19th century, is located nearby, towards the east in respect to the modern part, along the path that leads to Monte Grammondo.
Numerous villas have appeared in the territory Mortola Superiore , most of them built or purchased by personalities from all parts of the world, having fallen in love with the spectacular landscape of this area set just a stone’s throw from the French border, from where the coast can be seen as far as the island of Hyères.
On its territory an archeological site can be found, a site of great importance, about one kilometre as the crow flies from the paleolithic Caves of Balzi Rossi; in 1993 numerous relics in chipped stone were found on this site.
Moreover il Santuario di Nostra Signora dell'Aria Aperta is seated here , it dates back to the XVII century with consecutive extension works. The characteristic facade affixed with policrome depictions in gravestone and terracotta, preserves inside a collection of local and Italian offerings coming from five hundred shrines.
