Territory of Vernazza:

Vernazza, starting from the west ,is the second town of the Cinque Terre, nestled in a bay between Monterosso and Riomaggiore. This territory , too , is characterized by the typical terraces for vine cultivation , a morphological style achieved by man through the centuries. ( More Less )

The territory is part of the National Park of the Cinque Terre.

The municipality is made up of the five hamlets of Corniglia, Drignana, Muro, Prevo and San Bernardino for a total of 12,3 km².

Cultural Vernazza:

The beautiful church of S. Margherita di Antiochia, (Margaret the Virgin) built on the seaside on the most western part of the town. It is said to date back to the 13th century.

At 325mts a.s.l is the Shrine of Nostro Signore di Reggio.

The Doria castle has been in this territory since 1080, it was built on a rock dominating the town and the bay and has quite an irregular form.

Under the castle is a quandrangular bastion, Belforte , it rises above the sea stacks at the entrance of the small port and probably dates back to the period of the reinforcement of Genovese dominion.

At the beginning of the path which leads to Corniglia, there is a tower which was probably built the same time as the castle.

An old monastery composed of a wall, a tower, a deconsecrated church and a beautiful cloister is today, the town hall of Vernazza. The building dates back to the 17th century.
