Its origins go back to the 2nd century BC: the ancient Vada Sabatia developed along the Via Emilia Scauri, a strategic crossroad for Liguria, Piedmont and Tuscany. With the fall of the Roman Empire the town was destroyed. It flourished again under the Franks and from the 7th-9th centuries was an episcopate . It belonged to the Del Carretto Marquises, and then came under the jurisdiction of the district of Savona and then that of the Republic of Genoa. During the Genoese dominion the area of Porto Vado, enjoyed a strong and constant growth in trade. Little remains of the old town, save the town hall building and the ruins of the Del Carretto castle, which dominates the village of Segno. Some seventeenth-century fortifications can still be seen, as well as the ruins of Fort Santo Stefano , San Giovanni Bastion, and above all the impressive Fort of San Giacomo with its seventeenth-century batteries.

The Civic Museum of Villa Groppallo holds many collections among which pieces from the roman period and from the middle ages as well as a rich collection of II to V century coins. The Pinacoteca Martini preserves important art collections and a room dedicated to thes culptor Arturo Martini.

There is a regular ferry service to Corsica(Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi).
