Dolceacqua is a typical medieval village in the Nervia valley along the stream of the same name. The old part of the village , set at the foot of Mount Rebuffao, is dominated by the Doria Castle which the villagers called Terra (Terà in local dialect). The modern part of the village , called il Borgo, extends on the other side of the stream, on the sides of the road which runs in the valley.

It enjoys a mild meso-mediteranean climate. In the weather stations of Dolceacqua -Borgonuovo the average temperature in January is 7.6°C and 22.3°C in July; there is modrate rainfall (about 750mm per year) and on average 55 days per year. Dolceacqua is 47 kms from Imperia.

La Morsio picture gallery, which opens on appointment, holds the works of the painter Giovanni Morsio.

The Doria Castle is an ancient fortress of Dolceacqua, in the Nervia valley, in the province of Imperia. The castle is inside the historic hamlet of the small town in a dominating position. In the XII century the structure was originally made up of a circular tower ,which still stands in the centre of this historic complex, and a smaller building where the guard room was. The castle was extended then by the local lord, Stefano Doria, who had a butteressed bastion added to the previuos building in the east wing and the two identical towers. Today the structure appears to be divided into two blocks,in fact the front part was intended for the control and safety of the village as well as the housekeeping, prison and storage rooms; behind , connected to the whole block by a spacious courtyard, was where the delegation and reception rooms were and also where the local lords lived. The castle lays aligned with Ventimiglia, its walls show the strong interposed and turbitide layers of sandstone, The Bouma Sequence (sedimentary structures in turbidite) is particularily evident in this structure. The fifteenth century parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate, absorbs a square-angular tower of the ancient walls which became the base of the belfry. The holy building was rebuilt in baroque appearance and inside is richly ornated: it preserves the delicate and precious polyptych of Santa Devota, a work of 1515 by Ludovico Brea, maestro of the prevalent pictorial of Liguria.

• A walk among the olive groves, the vines,and the mediteranean vegetation and then on paved roads to Terre Bianche, so named because of the typical clay famous for its erosive phenomena called “calanchi”, nearby you can catch sight of some military defence walls and the ruins of primitive “castellari” typical fortifications of Liguria.
