Savona - Riviera delle Palme
The town of Liguri Ingauni, Albenga was an important roman municipality which today hosts one of the most preserved historic centres of west liguria, left intact since the middle ages. ( More Less )
The extremely fertile plain, already farmed by the romans, has allowed the growth of a type of specialized agricuture based on four prime products: Prickly artichokes, the zucchine trombetta, ox heart tomatoes and violet asparagus all chosen by Slow Food.
Renowned for the DOC quality of its vineyards , the hills of Albenga are the home of Ormeasco and Pigato, to which is dedicated a festival every september in the hamlet of Salea.
The intact historic medieval centre , whose structure traces the ancient roman layout, making Albenga an exceptional cultural town: from the square where the 15th century Palazzo Peloso Cepolla overlooks with its angular 12th century tower, to the romanic gothic cathedral of San Michele side by side to the 14th century bell tower, and the Baptistery, one of the most important monuments of Liguria. Behind the cathedral is Piazza dei Leoni with Costa Palace (which now is a Bishop's Diocese) there is the museum of Holy Arts of the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia and the Oddo Palace, which hosts a permanent exhibition of more than 200 antique glass from the excavations of the antique burial ground of Albenga. Just outside the walls in via Mameli you can find the museum of Olive Culture , an expository space with stone walls and cobbles , part of an ancient olive mill which preserves the traditional tools used in the countryside, like copper baking trays for farinata(made from chickpea flour) , cauldrons and ladels.
The seabeds of this area are ideal for those who are keen on birdwatching and scuba diving, as they offer lots of opportunity to dive in and discover the shipwrecks in the nearby waters of the appealing island of Gallinara, a small island shaped like a turtle that has been a Natural Reserve of the region since 1989 because of the many species of plants and marine life.
