Because of its strategic position, Dego was often at the centre of military events. It was a possession of Bonifacio Del Vasto (1091), and went to the Del Carretto di Savona family (1142), who fortified it and had their own mint before submitting to Genoa. Occupied by the Savoys in the seventeenth century, in 1735 Dego was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia; in 1796 it was the theatre of a famous battle that saw the Austrian army fighting against the Napoleonic troops. From this past there remain the ruins of the Del Carretto medieval castle dating back to the 13th century. Local manufacturing activity hinges on some glass firms, this being an old craft already present in Val Bormida in the 13th century. Among local products, we can mention chestnuts, hazelnuts, truffles and wine. The “Dego Hill” is an area of great naturalistic interest, recognized as a Site of Community Interest (SCI) according to the Community “Habitat” Directive, which safeguards habitats and animals and plant species of particular importance at a European level. In this natural environment, characterized by big beech woods, there are charming tourist itineraries. ( More Less )
