Hotel in Borghetto Santo Spirito

Borghetto Santo Spirito

Borghetto is a pleasant seaside resort that also gives you an opportunity for pleasant walks in the hills and excursion paths towards the villages in the hinterland. The village, encircled by walls, was founded in 1288 at the behest of Albenga as a defensive outpost against Loano. It took its name from the Santo Spirito hospice founded there in the 12th century, an influential convent from the cultural point of view and the destination of many pilgrimages. A commune coming under Albenga, Borghetto always also demanded a measure of independence, and in the first half of the fourteenth century came under the Republic of Genoa, following its vicissitudes. It became a commune in 1797. The historical area, above Via Aurelia, preserves the original rectangular layout. The old fortified structures still survive, with ample stretches of thirteenth-century walls incorporated in the houses in the inhabited area, the remains of two towers and the west gate redone in Baroque style with a peculiar niche dedicated to the Madonna of the Watch. A short distance from the sandy beaches and from the village centre you meet the charming Val Varatella, an ideal place for walks or horse rides, which gives an opportunity to visit the splendid caves of nearby Toirano.
