Balestrino

Balestrino is a hill village surrounded by olive groves in the valley of Rio Ponte, constituted by four scattered nucleuses, the main one being Borgo, dominated by the Del Carretto castle. Once the property of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro dei Monti, in 1091 it went to Bonifacio Del Vasto and subsequently to the Del Carretto family (13th century), who kept it until the 18th century. The marquis's castle, which dominates the village, is a beautiful example of a medieval fort. Today Balestrino maintains intact the medieval charm of the old part, which for the time being can only be observed as a whole from outside. Just between Toirano and Balestrino there is a pleasant stretch of the Terre Alte Path, which with a walk of an hour and a half takes you up the abandoned Borgo hamlet.
