Riva Ligure, situated on the coast of the Riviera di Ponente, is about 14 kms from the chief town. It has a mediteranean climate ,similar to that of Santo Stefano al Mare and Sanremo: in fact Riva Ligure is not affected by the cold breeze coming from the Argentina valley which hit Taggia and the nearby seaside resort of Arma.
The lenghtening of the coastal road open to vehicles between 1839 and 1840 brought about the findings of some archeoligical elements in the ancient area of Costa Balenae di Capo Don. Other excavations were done in 1923, 1937 and 1943 and it was precisely in this year that the discovery of an ancient mosaic flooring was made, it was however later demolished because of the constuction of defence barriers along the coast; more recent excavations were done in 1982 and 1987.
The fortress: a stronghold against the dangers of barbarous pirates. Riva Ligure together with Santo Stefano al Mare, then known as “Piano della Foce” was the area most hit by pirate assaults during the second half of the XVI century. Five raids, one after the other, brought to the phenonemen of people abandoning their homes in the centre of the coast but later it became necessary to build towers and strongholds in order to return to their lives and to fishing which was part of their livlihood.
The church of San Maurizio the martyr is a religious building, located in the historic centre. Its construction was decided in order to impose a solution to the inadequacy of the previous building, today it is the shrine of the Madonna di Buon Consiglio.
