Già Plinio, an old man, describes the name Portofino as deriving from the presence of dolphins in the Gulf of Tigullio.
This town is situated in the western part of the Gulf at the foot of the cape of the same name. It borders to the north with Santa Margherita Ligure, to the west with Comogli, to the south and to the west is the Luguria sea.
The hinterland includes the Natural Regional Park of Portofino and the protected Wildlife Sanctuary. The best way to appreciate the wonders of this park is to go through its characteristic and appealing paths and tracks, which are all well mapped. Crossing this 60km area one can discover the wealth and variety of its natural environment, landscape and monuments. The sea offers a vast spread of poseidon and splendid seabeds.
Guy De Maupassant wrote. “ A small village , Portofino, stretches crescent shaped along the edge of the bay”
Of importance is Brown castle, an ancient military fortress positioned at the entrance of the cove. It is thought that the castle was built around the 10th century and because of its strategic position it was many times subject to siege and seizure by Saracen pirates up to the early 15th century.
Excavations in the area have uncovered ruins of a watch tower of the roman period dating back to the second or third century BC.
The structure standing today dates back to 1425. It has been the property of the town since 1961 and has undergone restructure; it is now the seat of various cultural events. The splendid garden is rich in rose gardens and all kinds of flowers; most interesting are the many pergola vine trainings.
The church of San Giorgio is a small place of worship built on a cliff overlooking the cape. Inside are preserved some precious paintings.
The parish church of San Martino di Tour is in the old part of the town and preserves interesting works like: 17th century wooden statues of the Addolorata, and Maragliano , which represents five specific figures.
The lighthouse of Portofino at the foot of the mountain, offers a breathtaking view.
